What is African Black Soap?

African Black Soap is traditionally produced using plant materials such as plantain skins, which are carefully dried before being roasted. The resulting material is combined with plant-based oils and butters to create the distinctive soap.

Traditional recipes can vary between makers and regions, with some preparations incorporating cocoa pods alongside or instead of plantain skins. This natural production process means African Black Soap can vary considerably in colour, ranging from golden and caramel brown through to deep brown or almost black.

So despite its name, authentic African Black Soap does not necessarily have to be black — the warm mottled brown colouring of each bar is part of its natural character.

How to Use

For the body:
Wet a sponge or washcloth and gently rub it against the soap to create a lather. Apply the lather to wet skin before rinsing thoroughly.

For the hair:
Wet hair thoroughly and work a small amount of soap into a lather before cleansing the hair and scalp. Rinse thoroughly and follow with your preferred conditioner.

Because traditional African Black Soap can provide quite a thorough cleanse, begin with a small amount and discontinue use if irritation occurs.

How to Store

African Black Soap naturally contains glycerin and can readily absorb moisture from the surrounding environment. When exposed to moisture it may become darker and softer, which is a natural characteristic of the soap.

Keep unused soap wrapped or stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry location.

When using it in the shower or bath, allow the soap to drain and dry thoroughly between uses. Do not leave it sitting in water or on a wet surface, as this can cause the bar to soften considerably.

Each bar is cut by hand, so your soap may not be a perfectly square or rectangular shape. Weight, colour, shape and texture may also vary slightly from the photographs.

These variations are expected with traditionally produced African Black Soap and are not considered defects.

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with clean water. Patch testing before first use is recommended, particularly for sensitive skin. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.
